Abstract

India is well known in the world for its contribution to the ancient Mathematics and even people agree in different parts of the world that India has done very well in the areas of pure mathematics during contemporary time through the work of researchers at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Bombay and large number of universities in the different parts of the country. It is true that in contemporary time most of the educational centers of higher education in India mainly focus on pure form of Mathematics, Definition, Existence and uniqueness theorems, Lemma and corollaries. Mainly problems are direct/well posed (solution exists which is unique and stable). However, illustration of mathematical problems with physical phenomena or processes and interpretation of solution and its visualization or formulation of Physical phenomena in appropriate mathematical concepts are not emphasized in the teaching of Pure or Applied Mathematics.

For a long time people in this part of the world thought Mechanics and Relativity Theory are the only parts of Applied Mathematics. Fourier analysis, in particular, and Harmonic Analysis in general, Applied Functional Analysis, Numerical Analysis were not considered as part of Applied Mathematics till the eighties. Till early sixties only classical mathematics like special function, sequence and series, mechanics, geometry were taught in most of the educational institutions. Modern Algebra, Topology, Measure Theory, Functional Analysis, Approximation Theory Harmonic Analysis, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Graph Theory, Differentiable Manifold, Complex Analysis and their applications to Real World Problems have become popular in India due to various steps taken by Indian Government on the initiative of a group of talented Indians since the beginning of sixties. In this article emergence of Applied and Industrial Mathematics in India will be discussed. It is also interesting to note that
many significant applications of mathematics to solve real world problems have been carried out by engineers and scientists. It is also heartening to observe that some Indians received very prestigious awards for applying mathematics in their work such as Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (He was Ph.D. supervisor of late Prof. S.K. Trehan, a distinguished Indian Applied Mathematician and I had privilege to host him at my residence in early nineties), Prof. Srinivasan S.R. Varadhan, Abel Prize winner and recipient of US National Medal of Science
(widely considered the panache of scientific achievement), Prof. C.R. Rao (FRS) recipient of US National Medal of Science and Prof. Thomas Kailath, recipient of US National Medal of Science, Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Science and Arts and former Director ICTP.

The article is divided into three parts. First part is devoted to the development of Applied Mathematics prior to 1960, the second part deals with development of the Industrial and Applied Mathematics between 1960-1990 (1990 is the year of establishment of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics). The third part contains status of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in different parts of India during 1990-2015, giving the details of how emerging
areas have spread. We conclude the article by presenting an assessment of what has been achieved till now and what is to be achieved in future.

I. Development during 500-1960

The period: 500-1200 A.D. is the golden period of Indian Mathematics during which besides invention of zero and operation with it, the knowledge of mathematics was provided solid foundation [1,4,5,6]. Area or perimeter of the standard geometrical figures including surface area and volume of sphere were introduced by Indians during this period along with fundamental concepts related to Trigonometry and Algebraic equations. Some of those results were rediscovered by Euler and Lagrange in the 18th century [1, p.477]. The period: 1201-1800 is treated as the period of commentaries of the earlier work and known for two major achievements, one for study of infinite series by Kerala School of Mathematics and other for the establishment of five big stone observatories in Delhi, Jaipur, Banaras, Mathura and Ujjain by Sawai Jai Singh (1688-1743). He got this work done under the guidance of Portuguese and Missionary in order to promote interest in observational astronomy. The Kerala School of
mathematics developed expansion of sin ø and cos ø about two hundred years before Gregory
and others.

Sir Autosh Mokherjee, is the first Indian Mathematicians (1864-1934) whose work includes pure as well as applied mathematics. His field of research includes theory of elliptic functions, Differential equations relating to different kinds of conics, and problems of hydrokinematic equations relating to rotational and irrotational motions of fluids. He was elected fellow of AMS (American Mathematical Society) in 1900. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University during 1906-14 and 1921-23. He got created first Chair of Applied Mathematics named, Ghose Chair of Applied Mathematics. It was offered to Professor Ganesh Prasad in 1914, who has proved himself as expert of both pure and Applied Mathematics.

However, he joined Banaras Hindu University in 1918, Varanasi, where he motivated a young boy named Badri Nath Prasad to study Mathematics, now known as Prof. B. N. Prasad. Subsequently, he became a distinguished scholar who led directions in mathematics research for more than a decade. He died in Jan. 1966 at the age of 67 in Allahabad. He was elected President of the Indian Science Congress Association and presided its 1966 session (2nd January to 10th January, 1966). He was also nominated member of the Rajay Sabha (Member Upper House of
the Indian Parliament, a unique honor for a mathematician by profession). He was expert of Fourier Analysis and several of his Ph.D. students like Prof. M.L. Misra, Prof. P.L. Bhatnagar, Prof. U.N. Singh, Prof. Jamil A. Siddiqi, Prof. T. Pati, Prof. Parmila Srivastav, Dr. S.R. Sinha, Dr. S.N. Bhatt, Prof. S.M. Mazhar etc. are renowned experts of their specialties. Prof. B.N. Prasad was closely associated with three reputed universities of India: Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Allahabad University (AU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). His three Ph.D. Students, Prof. U.N. Singh (father of the present Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University, Prof. Dinesh Singh), Prof. Jamil A. Siddiqi (Supervisor of the founder Secretary of ISIAM Prof. A.H. Siddiqi) and Prof. S.M. Mazhar (it is mere coincidence that his Ph.D. student Prof. Niranjan Singh was my Ph.D. examiner) were associated with AMU and played significant roles in spreading Modern Mathematics and its applications in India, particularly northern part of India. Contribution of Prof. B.N. Prasad, his research scholars, and research scholars of his research collaborators will be a major part of the Indian contributions in the Pure and Applied Mathematics during the last seventy years. In fact, he had taken the initiative in early sixties to establish a Research Institute of Mathematics in Allahabad on the pattern of TIFR, Bombay named Mehta Research Institute. Two illustrious Indian Applied Mathematicians, Prof. S.S. Shri
Khande and Prof. P.L. Bhatnagar were its Directors. Later on this was shifted to a suburb, of Allahabad and named Harish Chandra Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, managed by the Atomic Energy Commission, Government of India.

A few Remarkable Research Contributions Presented at International Conference held at Sharda University, Greater Noida ,29-31 Jan.2016

It is well known that Mathematics is the mother of all technologies. This was very well exhibited in the lectures of distinguished scholars gathered at Sharda University on the Silver Jubilee conference of Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Some of the emerging themes discussed are given below:

Prof L. Chua of California University at Berkeley, USA, a renowned electrical engineer explained in great detail that all elements are available to manufacture computer with brain. He also explained complexity and chaos in an interesting way. Prof. G. Rangarajan of Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore presented his recent research work on detection of connectivity patterns in brain network. Prof. Majaz Moonis, Director, Stroke of Medical Centre Massachussets University, USA elaborated his research on application of Mathematical tools and techniques to understand and cure diseases like epilepsy, sleep disorder and brain tumor. This kind of research is being carried out also at Sharda University. Prof. Veerappa Gowda of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre of Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore presented his interesting work on enhancement of oil recovery. Prof. Gunter Leugering, Vice President of a reputed university in Germany presented his current research work on “optimization materials and process in the context of Industrial Applications”. Other distinguished invited speakers devoted their talks on themes such as prediction of epilepsy seizure, understanding of global warming, accurate prediction of weather, volatility of financial market, storage and communication of Big Data, study of carbon nanotube.

In the key note address, Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan former Director International Centre of Theoretical Physics (a UNESCO organization), Trieste, Italy and currently a senior functionary of New York University explained relevance of Mathematical concepts in emerging fields of Science and Technology. Honb’le Home Minister, Govt. of India, Shri Rajnath Singh was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

MATHEMATICS IS MOTHER OF ALL TECHNOLOGIES: CONFERENCE CONCLUDES

An International Conference on the occasion of Silver Jubilee of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) was organized during 29th -31st January 2016 at Sharda University, Greater Noida in the joint venture of Sharda University and ISIAM.  However, Indian government agencies like NBHM, DST, INSA, DRDO, etc. and international agencies such as ICTP and CDC have provided financial assistance for this conference. Internationally reputed scientists, engineers and mathematicians namely, Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan (Ex-Director, ICTP, Trieste and now a senior functionary of New York University, USA), Prof. Leon O. Chua (University of Berkeley, renowned specialist of neural networks, chaos and non-linear circuits), Prof. Barbara Lee Keyfitz (Ohio State University, Former President ICIAM and Field Institute), Prof. Maria J. Esteban (CNRS, Paris and President ICIAM), Prof. Alistair Fitt (Vice Chancellor, Oxford Brooke University and Former Secretary ICIAM), Prof. R. Lozi (Nice, France, well known for Lozi Maps), Prof. Guenter Leugering (Vice President International Affairs Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nurnberg, Germany), Prof. Maria Skopina (Euler Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Saint Petersburg State University, Russia), etc. have participated and delivered lectures in this Conference. This Conference provided an opportunity for young scientists and engineers to learn systematic developments of those areas of mathematics which are essential for proper understanding of challenging problems of the contemporary times. It was clearly reflected in the Keynote Address of Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan and Prof. L. Chua, two renowned engineers known for their work in application of Mathematics. Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan highlighted the achievements of ISAM in the last 25 years and said applied Mathematics plays very vital role in solving real world problems. India should focus attention on these developments. Prof. Chua who is recipient of eight honorary doctorate degrees from different reputed universities of the world for his remarkable contribution in development of computer with brain explained his discovery.

ISIAM was established in 1990 to promote the teaching and research of those areas of mathematics which have great potential to solve problems of science, engineering, medical and social sciences. In the last 25 years, the Society has endeavored to achieve this goal. It has popularized this theme by organizing 12 international conferences in different institutions of India, publishing their proceedings with leading publisher like McMillan India, Longmann-Pitman Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Narosa, Kluwer Academic Publisher, Marcel Dekker, Taylor and Francis, American Institute of Physics, World Scientific Publisher, Springer. More than three dozen eminent scholars like Prof. I. Sloan (past President ICIAM), Prof. Peter Markovich (Newton Institute, Cambridge), Prof. Alain Arneodo (France), Prof. I.S. Duff (Director, Rutherford Laboratory of Numerical Analysis, London), Prof. M. Broakate (Technical University Munich, Germany) have delivered lectures in our earlier conferences. Very recently ISIAM has entered into an agreement with Springer to bring out a series on Industrial and applied Mathematics. Two books have already been published while several proposals of distinguished mathematicians of the world are under review by the Editorial Board.

The Conference was devoted to emerging themes of industrial and applied mathematics such as image processing with special focus on medical imaging, biometrics and tomography. It is not an exaggeration to say that these concepts have wide applications in oil industry, brain studies, seismology, and other branches of science and technology. A recent branch known as wavelet methods has been discussed by several experts attending this Conference. It is a refinement of Fourier analysis which is in practice since past 200 years.

Applications of Mathematical concepts to areas like National Security, Homeland Security & Law Enforcement, Enterprise and E-Government Services, Personal Information & Business Transaction, Brain like computers were discussed in detail during three days. Attempt should be made to popularize these applications.

         

India is well known throughout the world for its contribution to the ancient mathematics and even it is generally recognized by the good work in modern pure mathematics, especially by the work of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Central Universities. Several important conferences have been organized to promote and popularize the contribution of celebrated Indian mathematician, M.S. Ramanujan. It is well known that most of the educational institutions of higher learning in our country mainly focus on pure form of mathematics, definition, existence and uniqueness theorems, lemmas and corollaries. Generally problems are direct and well posed (solution exists which is unique and stable). In real world, most of the problems are not of this nature. Those problems which are not well posed and direct have been ignored for a long time. Illustration of mathematical problems with physical phenomenon or processes and interpretation of solutions and its visualization or formulation of physical phenomenon in appropriate mathematical concepts is not emphasized in the teaching of mathematics. The Society which is celebrating its 25 years of its existence was formed to provide training and research to solve the untouched problems which are quite challenging and related to many real world problems.

On the Silver Jubilee occasion of ISIAM, development of industrial and applied mathematics in India has been reviewed and the article based on it is published in the Souvenir of the conference. One can observe that India has produced brilliant applied mathematicians notably Nobel Laureate Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar, Prof. Srinivasan S.R. Vardhan, Abel Prize winner and recipient of US National Medal of Science, Prof. C.R. Rao (recipient of US National Medal of Science), Prof. Thomas Kailath (recipient of US National Medal of Science) and Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan (a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Science and Arts and former Director ICTP- a very prestigious UNESCO organization). Currently there is a strong group of applied mathematics at IIT-Bombay led by Prof. A.K. Pani. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre of Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore is carrying substantial research work in industrial and applied mathematics. We are delighted to note that these three centers of industrial and applied mathematics were well represented in this Conference. In fact, ISIAM has honored during the Silver Jubilee celebration Prof. A.K. Pani, IIT-Bombay, Prof. G. Rangarajan, IISc Bangalore and Prof. G.D.V. Gowda, TIFR CAM Bangalore for their outstanding contribution in the field of industrial and applied mathematics.  On this occasion Dr. Zakir Husain Award established by the Duty Society of Aligarh Muslim University has been presented to Prof. A. Adimurthi, TIFR, CAM, Bangalore and Prof. Mushahid Husain, Vice Chancellor, M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Bareilly.

On this occasion- Silver Jubilee celebration of ISIAM 2016, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay organized a 5 days advanced level workshop on an emerging theme –Variational Inequality and Applications under national programme on Differential Equations: Theory Computation & Applications. Fifty brilliant research scholars & young faculty members from all over the country attended this workshop. Distinguished experts of this field from India & abroad delivered series of lectures between 24th and 28th of January, 2016.

It is not out of place to say few words about the institution hosting the Conference. The Sharda University was established in 2009 by untiring efforts of Mr. P.K. Gupta, Chancellor and Mr. Y.K. Gupta, Pro-Chancellor. Currently, Sharda University having highly qualified faculty members has students from more than 30 countries. It comprises of Schools of Basic Sciences & Research, Engineering and Technology, Medical Sciences and Research, Architecture and Planning, Art, Design and Media Studies, Law, Allied Health Science, Language and Culture, Nursing Science and Research. Its faculty members are publishing their research papers, books, monographs, conference proceedings with leading publishers of the world such as Springer, Taylor and Francis, American Institute of Physics, World Scientific Publisher, Elsevier, etc.

Although Sharda University is comparatively young Institution but determination of the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor has made it possible to organize a conference of this magnitude and scale. Hon’ble Shri Rajnath Singh, Home Minister, Govt. of India who is Physicist by profession, very kindly squeezed time out of his extremely busy schedule and inaugurated Silver Jubilee Conference of ISIAM on 29th January 2016.  He highlighted the contributions of the Indian mathematicians and said that “zero and decimal” is given by the India to the world. His also emphasized that vedic mathematics should also be brought into practice. He further highlighted that applied mathematics has played very vital role in scientific and industrial development. This shows his keenness to promote science and technology in the country.

Brief introduction of those who have been honored and received awards are given below:

Professor G. D. Veerappa Gowda, TIFR CAM, Bangalore: Dr. G. D. Veerappa Gowda is Professor at TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore. He has done fundamental work in the areas of Hyperbolic conservation laws, Control theory and Numerical approximation of conservation laws. Dr. Gowda obtained an explicit formula for the entropy weak solution of convex conservation laws with boundary conditions, extending the earlier work of Hopf and Lax for the initial value problem. Dr. Gowda has developed numerical schemes to solve problems arising in oil recovery and sand pile problem on a vertical source.

 

Professor G. Rangarajan, IISc., Bangalore: Dr. G. Rangarajan is Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Rangarajan has done valuable research work in the areas like Granger Causality from Fourier and Wavelet Transforms, Granger Causality for Point Processes, Mitigating the Effects of Noise on Granger Causality, Synchronized Extinction of Species, Movement Prediction in Neuroscience, Comparison of Linear Causality Measures,  Nonlinear Causality Measures, Neural Networks, First Passage Time Problems,  Synchronization and Pattern Formation in Coupled Dynamical Systems, Processes with Long Range Correlations, A New Method for Computing Lyapunov Exponents, Symplectic Integration of Nonlinear Hamiltonian Systems, Representations of Sp(6,R) and SU(3), Fractal Analysis in Geophysics, Generalized Replicator Dynamics, Evolutionary Games with Two Time Scales, Moment Invariants, Time Series Analysis in Geophysics and Free-Electron Laser (FEL) Theory.

Professor Amiya Kumar Pani, IIT, Bombay: Dr.  Amiya K. Pani is Professor at IIT, Bombay. He is well known for his research work in the area of numerical approximations of partial differential equations. His expertise includes construction, stability and convergence analysis of finite element methods, finite difference schemes, orthogonal spline collocation methods for free boundary problems, partial integro-differential equations, coupled equations in Oil Reservoir Studies, evolutionary variational inequalities and scientific computations for industrial applications.

Recipient of Dr. Zakir Husain Award (2013) Prof. A. Adimurthi TIFR CAM, Bangalore: Dr. A. Adimurthi is Professor at TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore. He is known for his remarkable contribution in the areas of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Variational Methods, Semi-linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Hyperbolic Conservation laws and Numerical analysis. An important problem solved by Prof. Adimurthi is related to the existence in two dimensions of solutions of critical exponent problems, a major hurdle in PDEs because of its non-compact nature, especially in low dimensions.

Recipient of Dr. Zakir Husain Award (2014) Professor Mushahid Husain Vice Chancellor, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly: Professor Mushahid Husain is Vice Chancellor of MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly. He is a distinguished Scientist, Senior Professor and founder Director of Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi. Professor Husain undertook a challenging initiative to establish Materials Research Laboratory which is recognized as a Training Centre in semiconductor by ICTP, Italy and NAM Centre, New Delhi. This training centre has provided training to a large number of scientists from SAARC countries. Professor Husain introduced various aspects of nanotechnology which are solved by the application of Applied Mathematics. A group of researchers under his leadership has worked on non-linear vibration of single wall carbon nanotubes.

 

The valedictory function was attended by distinguished scholars who were unanimous that interaction between mathematicians, engineers and physicists should be enhanced which will help to improve the quality of research in these disciplines. They are of the opinion that prosperity and development of any nation is directly related to the advancement in applied mathematics. Prof. U.P. Singh Chairman Silver Jubilee Programme Committee strongly feels that the community of Industrial and Applied Mathematicians should approach to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to incorporate promotion of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in his agenda of Make in India. He suggested that a concrete proposal should be submitted at an earliest opportunity.

Very recently ISIAM has entered into an agreement with Springer to bring out a series on Industrial and applied Mathematics. Two books have already been published while several proposals of distinguished mathematicians of the world are under review by the Editorial Board.

The Conference was devoted to emerging themes of industrial and applied mathematics such as image processing with special focus on medical imaging, biometrics and tomography. It is not an exaggeration to say that these concepts have wide applications in oil industry, brain studies, seismology, and other branches of science and technology. A recent branch known as wavelet methods has been discussed by several experts attending this Conference. It is a refinement of Fourier analysis which is in practice since past 200 years.

Applications of Mathematical concepts to areas like National Security, Homeland Security & Law Enforcement, Enterprise and E Government Services, Personal Information & Business Transaction, Brain like computers were discussed in detail during three days. Attempt should be made to popularize these applications.

India is well known throughout the world for its contribution to the ancient mathematics and even it is generally recognized by the good work in modern pure mathematics, especially by the work of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Central Universities. Several important conferences have been organized to promote and popularize the contribution of celebrated Indian mathematician, M.S. Ramanujan. It is well known that most of the educational institutions of higher learning in our country mainly focus on pure form of mathematics, definition, existence and uniqueness theorems, lemmas and corollaries. Generally problems are direct and well posed (solution exists which is unique and stable). In real world, most of the problems are not of this nature. Those problems which are not well posed and direct have been ignored for a long time. Illustration of mathematical problems with physical phenomenon or processes and interpretation of solutions and its visualization or formulation of physical phenomenon in appropriate mathematical concepts is not emphasized in the teaching of mathematics. The Society which is celebrating its 25 years of its existence was formed to provide training and research to solve the untouched problems which are quite challenging and related to many real world problems.

On the Silver Jubilee occasion of ISIAM, development of industrial and applied mathematics in India has been reviewed and the article based on it is published in the Souvenir of the conference. One can observe that India has produced brilliant applied mathematicians notably Nobel Laureate Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar, Prof. Srinivasan S.R. Vardhan, Abel Prize winner and recipient of US National Medal of Science, Prof. C.R. Rao (recipient of US National Medal of Science), Prof. Thomas Kailath (recipient of US National Medal of Science) and Prof. K.R. Sreenivasan (a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Science and Arts and former Director ICTP- a very prestigious UNESCO organization). Currently there is a strong group of applied mathematics at IIT-Bombay led by Prof. A.K. Pani. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre of Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore is carrying substantial research work in industrial and applied mathematics. We are delighted to note that these three centers of industrial and applied mathematics were well represented in this Conference. In fact, ISIAM has honored during the Silver Jubilee celebration Prof. A.K. Pani, IIT-Bombay, Prof. G. Rangarajan, IISc Bangalore and Prof. G.D.V. Gowda, TIFR CAM Bangalore for their outstanding contribution in the field of industrial and applied mathematics.  On this occasion Dr. Zakir Husain Award established by the Duty Society of Aligarh Muslim University has been presented to Prof. A. Adimurthi, TIFR, CAM, Bangalore and Prof. Mushahid Husain, Vice Chancellor, M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Bareilly.

On this occasion- Silver Jubilee celebration of ISIAM 2016, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay organized a 5 days advanced level workshop on an emerging theme –Variational Inequality and Applications under national programme on Differential Equations: Theory Computation & Applications. Fifty brilliant research scholars & young faculty members from all over the country attended this workshop. Distinguished experts of this field from India & abroad delivered series of lectures between 24th and 28th of January, 2016.

It is not out of place to say few words about the institution hosting the Conference. The Sharda University was established in 2009 by untiring efforts of Mr. P.K. Gupta, Chancellor and Mr. Y.K. Gupta, Pro-Chancellor. Currently, Sharda University having highly qualified faculty members has students from more than 30 countries. It comprises of Schools of Basic Sciences & Research, Engineering and Technology, Medical Sciences and Research, Architecture and Planning, Art, Design and Media Studies, Law, Allied Health Science, Language and Culture, Nursing Science and Research. Its faculty members are publishing their research papers, books, monographs, conference proceedings with leading publishers of the world such as Springer, Taylor and Francis, American Institute of Physics, World Scientific Publisher, Elsevier, etc.

Although Sharda University is comparatively young Institution but determination of the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor has made it possible to organize a conference of this magnitude and scale. Hon’ble Shri Rajnath Singh, Home Minister, Govt. of India who is Physicist by profession, very kindly squeezed time out of his extremely busy schedule and inaugurated Silver Jubilee Conference of ISIAM on 29th January 2016. This shows his keenness to promote science and technology in the country.

Brief introduction of those who have been honored and those who received awards are given below:

 Professor G. D. Veerappa Gowda TIFR CAM, Bangalore: Dr. G. D. Veerappa Gowda is Professor at TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore. He has done fundamental work in the areas of Hyperbolic conservation laws, Control theory and Numerical approximation of conservation laws. Dr. Gowda obtained an explicit formula for the entropy weak solution of convex conservation laws with boundary conditions, extending the earlier work of Hopf and Lax for the initial value problem. This formula played a major role in solving exact controllability problems. He developed a well-posed theory for scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux. This theory has important applications in two-phase problems. Dr. Gowda has developed numerical schemes to solve problems arising in oil recovery and sand pile problem on a vertical source.

Dr. Gowda is a fellow of Indian National Science Academy and Dean of TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore. Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) honours Professor Gowda for his outstanding contribution in Applied Mathematics on the occasion of Silver Jubilee of ISIAM (2016).

Professor G. Rangarajan IISc., Bangalore: Dr. G. Rangarajan is Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Rangarajan has done valuable research work in the areas like Granger Causality from Fourier and Wavelet Transforms, Granger Causality for Point Processes, Mitigating the Effects of Noise on Granger Causality, Synchronized Extinction of Species, Movement Prediction in Neuroscience, Comparison of Linear Causality Measures,  Nonlinear Causality Measures, Neural Networks, First Passage Time Problems,  Synchronization and Pattern Formation in Coupled Dynamical Systems, Processes with Long Range Correlations, A New Method for Computing Lyapunov Exponents, Symplectic Integration of Nonlinear Hamiltonian Systems, Representations of Sp(6,R) and SU(3), Fractal Analysis in Geophysics, Generalized Replicator Dynamics, Evolutionary Games with Two Time Scales, Moment Invariants, Time Series Analysis in Geophysics and Free-Electron Laser (FEL) Theory.

Dr. Rangarajan’s experience has been diverse and his few notable assignments include: Chairman, Division of Interdisciplinary Research, IISc; Director, Indo-French Centre for Applied Mathematics (IFCAM); Convener, National Mathematics Initiative at IISc; Coordinator, DST Centre for Mathematical Biology; Programme Coordinator, Indo-US Virtual Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (VI-MSS).

Dr. Rangarajan has number of honors and awards to his credit such as J. C. Bose National Fellow, Homi Bhabha Fellow, Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques (Knight of the Order of Palms), Government of France. He is a fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India. Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) honours Professor Rangarajan for his outstanding contribution in Applied Mathematics on the occasion of Silver Jubilee of ISIAM (2016).

 Professor Amiya Kumar Pani IIT, Bombay: Dr.  Amiya K. Pani is Professor at IIT, Bombay. He is well known for his research work in the area of numerical approximations of partial differential equations. His expertise includes construction, stability and convergence analysis of finite element methods, finite difference schemes, orthogonal spline collocation methods for free boundary problems, partial integro-differential equations, coupled equations in Oil Reservoir Studies, evolutionary variational inequalities and scientific computations for industrial applications.

Professor Pani has collaborated with distinguished mathematicians like Prof. Graeme Fairweather (Colorado School of Mines) on alternate mixed finite element methods and orthogonal spline collocation methods for partial integro differential equations, Prof. Jin Yun Yuan and Prof. D. Pedro (UFPR, Curitiba, Brazil) on the theoretical analysis and computational methods for Viscoelastic Fluid Flow Problems, and Prof. S. K. Chung (Seoul National University, Korea) on finite element analysis of fourth order evolution equations and Prof. Kannan Moudgalya (Chemical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay ) on efficient numerical methods for differential algebraic equations and on mathematical as well as computational methods for Particle Size Distributions in Emulsion Polymerisation Process.

Professor Pani is a fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India. Dr. Pani was awarded the Best Young Mathematician for his outstanding contributions to Numerical Analysis, Partial Differential Equations and Industrial Mathematics by the Indian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) honours Professor Pani for his outstanding contribution in Applied Mathematics on the occasion of Silver Jubilee of ISIAM (2016).

Recipient of Dr. Zakir Husain Award (2013) Prof. A. Adimurthi TIFR CAM, Bangalore: Dr. A. Adimurthi is Professor at TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore. He is known for his remarkable contribution in the areas of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Variational Methods, Semi-linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Hyperbolic Conservation laws and Numerical analysis.

An important problem solved by Prof. Adimurthi is related to the existence in two dimensions of solutions of critical exponent problems, a major hurdle in PDEs because of its non-compact nature, especially in low dimensions. Dr. Adimurthi has investigated the problem with Neumann boundary conditions for about ten years and proved several conjectures. Later, he shifted to the study of Hamilton Jacobi problems and conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes. He has investigated this systematically and proved the existence and uniqueness of physically relevant solutions.

Dr. Adimurthy is recipient of J.C. Bose Fellowship. He is a fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, India.

Recipient of Dr. Zakir Husain Award (2014) Professor Mushahid Husain Vice Chancellor, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly: Professor Mushahid Husain is Vice Chancellor of MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly. He is a distinguished Scientist, Senior Professor and founder Director of Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi.

Professor Husain undertook a challenging initiative to establish Materials Research Laboratory which is recognized as a Training Centre in semiconductor by ICTP, Italy and NAM Centre, New Delhi. This training centre has provided training to a large number of scientists from SAARC countries. Professor Husain introduced various aspects of nanotechnology which are solved by the application of Applied Mathematics. A group of researchers under his leadership has worked on non-linear vibration of single wall carbon nanotubes.

Professor Husain is actively associated with Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM) and has made significant contribution in its expansion. He has provided whole hearted support in achieving the objectives of ISIAM.

The valedictory function was attended by distinguished scholars who were unanimous that interaction between mathematicians, engineers and physicists should be enhanced which will help to improve the quality of research in these disciplines. They are of the opinion that prosperity and development of any nation is directly related to the advancement in applied mathematics. Prof. U.P. Singh Chairman Silver Jubilee Programme Committee strongly feels that the community of Industrial and Applied Mathematicians should approach to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to incorporate promotion of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in his agenda of Make in India. He suggested that a concrete proposal should be submitted at an earliest opportunity.
